Quotes and information on Deafness:
"Coping with another person's deafness is an excellent
litmus test of a hearing person's character." David Wright
- British poet in his autobiography "Deafness"
- There are 24,000,000 hearing impaired and deaf people in
the United States. Two million of these are totally deaf.
"Deaf minds develop visual skills and visual thinking
beyond the usual capacity of a hearing mind. Visual thinkers
collectively create an amazingly rich visual culture, which
is reflected most of all in their signed languages."
From "A Man without Words" by Susan Schaller
"We can do everything they can - except hear."
Ron Peck - A freshman football player at Gallaudet University
before running 190 yards in a 47-7 victory over Brooklyn
College.
Upon realizing everyone was not deaf, Henry Kisor thought,
"deafness was a minor, if interesting, human characteristic,
like freckles, blond hair, double-jointedness, or the ability
to teeter along the top of a board fence." Henry Kisor --
Book editor & columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times.
Synopsis of Silent Climb
- Silent Climb is the story of two bright college
students who are deaf; one is a computer wizard and the
other is graduating a semester early to go on an adventure.
These two students dispel the notion of "deaf & dumb" .
Ramiro signs up with Reachout Expeditions to go on an ice
climbing trip in Colorado. This is the story of overcoming
not only communication barriers but one of achieving a difficult
goal through teamwork and perseverance. Silent Climb
presents positive role models for all handicapped individuals
and inspires everyone to reach for their full potential.
